Onyango grew up with an obsession for chess. He started playing at 5, idolized Kasparov and dreamt of becoming the first Kenyan grandmaster. Then catastrophe struck, Kasparov lost to Deep Blue – a machine! Perplexed and bereft, he wandered for years in search of a higher calling. He ultimately reached the same conclusion as Gandhi and Mandela before him – and enrolled in law school!
A founding partner of the firm, Onyango has a focus area that covers M&A, perfection of securities, collective investment schemes, trusts, public private partnerships, energy and conveyancing. He also takes limited instructions in commercial litigation but much rather prefers arbitration.
He loves the research that goes into the drafting of legal opinions, is fascinated by emerging competition practice in Kenya and is a fan of the innovative Huduma centers. He has been involved in energy projects to set up industrial plants that generate power from renewable sources as well as efforts to partner a private corporation with a parastatal for the purposes of carbon trading. He believes Africa is the future and still plays chess!
